Peabody Energy Promotes Robert L. Reilly and Terry L. Bethel

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Peabody Energy today announced that Robert L. Reilly has been named Senior Vice President of Business Development, reporting to Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Corporate Development Richard A. Navarre.

In his new role, Reilly will continue to be responsible for the domestic business development functions at Peabody, with added responsibility for the international business development activities that were formerly assigned to Tayeb Tahir, who recently was named President of Peabody China.

Reilly was named Senior Vice President of Business and Resource Development in August 2007. He joined Peabody in 2000 as Director of Taxes and has also served as Vice President of Taxes; Vice President of Corporate Development; and Vice President of Southwestern U.S. Sales for Peabody's sales and marketing subsidiary. He holds a Bachelor of Science in accountancy degree from the University of Missouri - Columbia and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Reporting to Reilly are Directors of Business Development L. Cartan Sumner, Allen A. Capdeboscq and Alice M. Tharenos; and Management Associate Ross B. Richard.

Terry L. Bethel has been named Senior Vice President of Resource Management and Real Estate Development, with responsibility for implementing Peabody's coal reserve and surface land strategies, as well as enhancing the company's real estate holdings through commercial, residential and recreational development activities. Bethel reports to Executive Vice President of Strategy and Business Services Roger B. Walcott Jr.

Bethel has more than 25 years of finance and real estate development experience with Peabody, most recently serving as Vice President of Real Estate Development. He also served as Vice President of Finance and Administration for Peabody subsidiaries in Henderson, Ky., and Charleston, W.Va., as well as Vice President and Controller and Vice President of Administrative Services for Peabody in St. Louis. He joined the company in 1981 as Senior Accountant. Prior to joining Peabody, he was an Audit Manager for Lattimore, Black, Maggart & Welch and a Senior Auditor for Price Waterhouse, both in Nashville, Tenn. Bethel holds a Bachelor of Science in accounting degree from Murray State University and is a Certified Public Accountant.

Reporting to Bethel are Vice President of Resource Development James C. Sevem; Director of Real Estate Development Brian J. Yansen; and Directors of Real Estate Sales Mancil Robinson and Wilbur Engelhardt.

Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2006 sales of 248 million tons of coal and $5.3 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel approximately 10 percent of all U.S. electricity generation and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity.
