ARLINGTON, Va., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Pepco Energy Services, a subsidiary of Pepco Holdings, Inc. and a leader in energy and energy-related services, announced today that it has been awarded a contract to supply electricity to McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois.
Considered to be the "premier convention facility in North America," McCormick Place attracts more than three million visitors per year and is composed of four exhibition buildings with 2.7 million square feet of exhibit halls, four of the largest ballrooms in Chicago, and 700,000 square feet of meeting space.
The two-year contract that begins next month calls for Pepco Energy Services to provide the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) with nearly 300,000 megawatt-hours of electricity for its property, McCormick Place.
As part of this contract, Pepco Energy Services is partnering with Promet Energy, a leading African-American owned and managed energy company, who will perform energy management assessments for MPEA and conduct quarterly reviews of MPEA's energy consumption.
Historically, due to the industry's lack of certified minority and women- owned business enterprises (MBE/WBE), MPEA awarded its electricity contracts without any MBE/WBE participation. "Pepco Energy Services responded as a great corporate citizen should. It made the effort to identify and include a certified minority-owned business-in a meaningful way-as a method of responding to the Authority's MBE/WBE participation goals," said Harith Razaa, Business Diversity Manager at MPEA.
"Pepco Energy Services is delighted to be supplying electricity to McCormick Place, the extraordinary complex that powers the convention and trade show industry in Chicago," said John Huffman, President and Chief Operating Officer of Pepco Energy Services.
Pepco Energy Services supplies electricity to several government agencies in Chicago, including the General Services Administration, the Social Security Administration, the Railroad Retirement Board, the Bureau of Prisons and the Edward Hines, Jr. Veterans Affairs Hospital.
Pepco Energy Services also provides power to such national landmarks as the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian Institution, the National Gallery of Art and the Kennedy Center, as well as supplies 100% renewable resources to the Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island, the Ellis Island Immigration Museum on Ellis Island, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency headquarters, located in Washington, D.C.
