Federal Signal PIPS Technology Provides Electronic Eyes in New Jersey

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill., July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal Signal Corporation's Safety and Security Systems Group, a leader in advancing security and well-being, today announced that Lyndhurst Police Department in New Jersey is one of the latest departments to adopt its industry leading automated license plate recognition (ALPR) solution from its PIPS Technology subsidiary.

Lyndhurst Police Chief James O'Connor recently took a 15-minute ride around his township in a new patrol car outfitted with PIPS' ALPR technology, which Lyndhurst adopted to improve the safety and security of its community. During that short drive, the PIPS system automatically read and checked 359 plates for violations with six hits for unregistered vehicles. "Without the technology, it would have taken several officers weeks to read as many plates," stated Chief O'Connor.

"It used to be that you would stop at any suspicious vehicle, type the plate number into your computer and get a response from the station," said O'Connor. "Now we see every car and get a notification in real time that the vehicle is wanted for some wrongdoing." This advanced technology has many benefits aside from simply finding bad guys. It removes the officer from the equation of picking out plates thereby eliminating any claims of profiling. ALPR technology frees the officer to focus on their driving and surroundings, and the technology provides valuable data for investigations and exponentially improves the quality of enforcement.

Federal Signal's PIPS ALPR solution is now deployed in more than 30 states and 25 countries.

Commenting on the importance of the Federal Signal acquisition of PIPS Technology last year, Chief O'Connor noted, "I've worked with Federal Signal throughout my law enforcement career, and it's a name that I know and trust. Having a name like Federal Signal on my ALPR solution gives me peace of mind that I've made a sound investment -- one that I can rely on for many years to come."

The PIPS ALPR system is part of the Federal Signal Public Safety Systems industry platform.
