Mach 1 Global Services, Inc., a multi-national air cargo company and transportation, logistics and supply chain services provider, was recognized today as a SmartWay® Transport Partner by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This innovative, voluntary collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the freight industry is designed to increase energy efficiency, while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.
SmartWay Partners, including global transportation carriers and shippers, have committed to work with the EPA to improve air quality, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save fuel and protect public health. By 2012, the Partnership aims to reduce as much as 18 million metric tons of carbon equivalent and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxides annually. These reductions will create fuel savings of up to 150 million barrels of oil annually.
Mach 1 Global Services used the EPA's Freight Logistics Environmental and Energy Tracking (FLEET) Performance model to develop baseline environmental performance data for its fleet, determine current efficiency and quantify the environmental and cost-saving benefits. The areas of technologies and practices to be evaluated for environmental improvements include the following:
- Increasing the fuel efficiency of vehicles and aircraft;
- Deploying new technologies for Mach 1 Global air and ground fleets;
- Focusing on energy conservation in facilities;
- Implementing operational technologies that improve fuel efficiency and reduce miles driven;
- Continuing to take advantage of integrated network and intermodal capabilities.
"As a socially responsible corporate citizen, Mach 1 was dedicated to reducing the impact of freight transport on the environment prior to our participation in this program. Through our own initiatives, we reduced our consumption of diesel fuel by 35,000 gallons over the past year. We view the SmartWay Transport Partnership as an excellent program for environmental stewardship, while realizing economic benefits in the long term. It just makes good business sense. We anticipate saving as much as 30 percent annually over the next three years by implementing new strategic measures to improve our efficiencies," said Jamie Entzminger, President of Mach 1 Global Services. "Mach 1 Global will also take action to utilize Smart Way Transport Carrier Partners for a greater portion of its freight-forwarding operations in the future," she adds.
Joining the SmartWay partnership qualifies Mach 1 Global to use the SmartWay brand to advertise its environmental excellence.
Launched in February 2004, the SmartWay Transport Partnership aims to bring together major freight shippers, trucking companies, railroads, logistics companies and trade/professional associations to pursue mutually beneficial efficiencies that result in emissions reductions and other environmental improvements, as well as cost savings to the companies. The Partnership currently has more than 450 partners.
