Due to its incredible success at the inaugural event last year,
SEA Paddle NYC will be held this weekend, kicking off with The White
Water Gala on Saturday, August 16th, and followed by the 28-mile
paddle around Manhattan this Monday, August 18th.
Gerry Lopez, Darrick Doerner, Keith Malloy and Joel Tudor are just some of the surf legends confirmed to participate with Surfers' Environmental Alliance (SEA) in this year's paddle. Like last year, the event will be showcasing some of the top paddlers from around the world, as well as some surprise appearances by celebrities. The paddle starts on Monday, August 18th at 9 a.m. in the waters just off the South Street Seaport. Participants will follow a course up the East River, through the Harlem River and down the Hudson River, finishing the grueling 28-mile course at the North Cove Marina at the World Financial Center.
The White Water Gala is a white-themed fundraiser held on an oceanfront estate in Monmouth Beach, New Jersey, with all proceeds going to autism charities and SEA. This year's event on Saturday evening, August 16th, features live music, an open bar, catering by award-winning chef David Burke's Fromagerie, and a magical atmosphere. There will be a silent auction with donations from local businesses, surf industry, and celebrities, including rocker Jon Bon Jovi and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The auction will also feature four, yes four, Dick Brewer surfboards, hand-shaped by the master himself especially for SEA. These highly collectible boards have been known to fetch tens of thousands of dollars in previous auctions. In addition, Mr. Brewer will attend the event to personalize and oversee the auctioning of these prized boards. Additional auction items from Quiksilver, Kelly Slater and Tony Hawk will be available.
Last August, history was made on the waterways of New York City. SEA organized a group of top surfers, paddlers, and athletes, including several professionals and surfing legends, to circumnavigate Manhattan in the name of autism awareness and coastal preservation. The inaugural event, called 'SEA Paddle NYC', drew international attention and, in conjunction with the White Water Gala, raised over $90,000 for three autism awareness groups: Autism Speaks, NJCOSAC and Surfers Healing & SEA.
For information regarding registration, sponsorship, donations, tickets or other participation in SEA Paddle NYC, visit seapaddlenyc.org. Media & sponsors can contact Andrew Mencinsky at 732-804-4096.
Details for the Media: The staging for the event takes place at Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City, NJ at 7:00 am. To get there by ferry from New York City, just north of North Cove Marina, in Manhattan, there is a large, covered ferry dock. You can take a Yellow Water Taxi from this dock directly to Liberty Landing Marina. Please check the ferry schedule online for morning departure times at libertylandingmarina.com. There will be two primary spectator boats: the Water Taxi, which launches from Liberty Landing Marina, and Ventura, a sailboat located at North Cove Marina in Manhattan. The Water Taxi will follow the paddle in its entirety and also ferry people from NYC to the morning staging and the post-party. The Ventura will be out on the rivers for the paddle start and finish only, returning to its dock in between. Ventura is for event VIPs, sponsors and press only, as space is limited. If you would like to be on Ventura in the morning or afternoon, please contact Harris Davis at 646-845-4160 or Andrew Mencinsky at 732-804-4096 to reserve a spot. At approximately 8:45 am, the boats will move to an area just off the South Street Seaport, where the paddlers will enter the water. The Seaport and surrounding docks will provide another great vantage point for photographers, with the Brooklyn Bridge and the NY Fire Department fire boat as the backdrop. The group will proceed up the East River, into the Harlem River and then down the Hudson. There will be many viewing points along the Hudson from roughly 12:00 pm onward as they progress southbound. The paddle concludes between 2:30 and 3:30 pm at North Cove Marina at the World Financial Center. There will be another opportunity for photos and interviews as the paddlers come across the finish line. After the finish, the Water Taxi will run back and forth to Liberty Landing Marina for a wrap party at the Liberty House, located in the marina, with food and a cash bar. This party is for paddlers, sponsors, family members, volunteers, support, photographers/press and other participants/personnel associated with the paddle. See you on the water!
