Federal Signal and 3M Launch New Electronic Vehicle Registration Solution

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Federal Signal Corporation's Safety and Security Systems Group, a leader in advancing security and well-being, today announced that its PIPS Technology subsidiary has entered into a cooperative marketing agreement with 3M Corporation to provide an electronic vehicle registration (EVR) solution to the transportation market segment.

"3M is committed to delivering innovative solutions to complex problems that our customers are facing," said Terry Griffith, international marketing manager and EVR program manager for 3M's Traffic Safety Systems Division. "Partnerships like this enable our 70 plus subsidiaries around the world to work with customers to develop and deploy comprehensive systems that improve the safety of a country's infrastructure."

The PIPS and 3M solution improves compliance with the vehicle registration process, and it provides revenue to governments to help improve transportation systems. Additionally, EVR enhances public safety and security, increases the accuracy and timeliness of vehicle registration data and reduces the overall costs to administer and maintain a vehicle registration system.

EVR is a fully integrated, turnkey solution that incorporates automated license/number plate recognition (ALPR/ANPR) technology from PIPS and passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology. The solution can automatically identify vehicles and validate the identity, status and authenticity of the data associated with that vehicle through vehicle registration databases, insurance information, property tax records, or other characteristics that may be tied to the vehicle.

The first EVR system deployed by PIPS and 3M is online in Bermuda. Bermuda was losing nearly $2.5 million in annual revenue due to non-compliance of the vehicle registration process. Since the deployment of EVR in Bermuda, the non-compliance rate has been reduced by 50% according to estimates from Bermuda's Ministry of Tourism and Transport.

"This is a great partnership with tremendous potential for both companies," said Michael K. Wons, vice president and general manager of Federal Signal's Public Safety Systems Division. "This is a clearly defined need with global opportunity. 3M has been a global leader in the transportation market for more 60 years. Federal Signal has been providing safety and security solutions for more than 100 years, and our PIPS subsidiary is the ALPR world leader in the transportation sector. When industry leaders come together to meet customers' emerging needs, new robust solutions emerge. This is a great partnership and we're excited about the possibilities."
