Dot Hill Announces Plans to Support Intel System on a Chip Platform

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. , a world-class provider of entry-level and midrange storage innovations for OEMs and system integrators (SIs), today announced plans to develop future storage solutions based on the Intel(R) EP80579 Integrated Processor family, formerly known as Tolapai.

The highly integrated System on Chip (SoC) architecture, based on the same blueprint as Intel's existing processors, will offer new levels of performance and energy efficiency versus traditional SoCs, combine multiple functions, and will be customized to target the company's traditional computing businesses as well as several growth areas. The combination of the Intel EP80579, Dot Hill's proprietary RAID controller architecture, and patented PCI interconnect (operating at PCI Express speeds) allows Dot Hill to leapfrog the competition with its next-generation controllers in terms of host-attach performance, drive-attach versatility, end-user ease-of-use, and data management services.

One application expected to employ the new architecture is the Hermes Spacecraft (http://www.hermesspace.com/), a private space shuttle project built on the premise that anyone who wants to take a trip into space should have the means to do so. The spacecraft, which features a development version of the Dot Hill next generation RAID controller using the Intel EP80579, is on display today here at Intel Developer Forum.

"The Intel EP80579 Integrated Processor is highly synergistic with Dot Hill's Rapid Evolution Storage Architecture(TM)," said Dana Kammersgard, Dot Hill's president and chief executive officer. "Our next-generation storage offerings will be able to put the cost, power and size advantages of the Intel SoC design to good use, as we work to maintain the competitive advantage that we provide our customers and partners. As we move to deploy the EP80579 in future general purpose Dot Hill RAID products, our experience in developing ruggedized storage for the defense and transportation industries makes our products particularly well-suited for use in the emerging market of commercial space flight."
