ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Borders, a leading retailer of books, music and movies, will open a new store and separate newsstand location in Detroit Metro Airport's (DTW) new North Terminal Sept. 17. The 1,431-square-foot store will offer more than 7,000 book titles including audiobooks, DVDs, a selection of small consumer electronics and an assortment of gift and stationery items -- all in an award-winning retail format. "We're pleased to open both a new Borders store as well as a newsstand in DTW's new North Terminal," said Jill Lyon, vice president of Store Planning and Construction for Borders Group. "Whether shopping for a bestselling book, a DVD they can enjoy while en route to their next destination, or a quick snack they can eat on the way to their gate, Borders is committed to serving travelers coming through the North Terminal."

Borders also operates stores in DTW's McNamara Terminal as well as in airports in Baltimore; Phoenix; Orlando, Fla.; Seattle; Newark, N.J.; Boston; Houston; Las Vegas; Miami; Asheville, N.C., as well as in Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati, Ohio.

"We think Borders will be a great addition to DTW's new North Terminal concession program," said Detroit Metropolitan Airport CEO Lester Robinson. "The Borders stores at our McNamara Terminal have been very well received by our travelers, and we are especially proud to carry over this Michigan-based brand into our award-winning program at our new North Terminal."

This year, Borders was awarded the "Best Specialty Retail Brand Operator" and "Retailer with Highest Regard for Customer Services" by "Airport Revenue News" (ARN), a leading publication for airport executives, concessionaires and others involved in the aviation industry. Previously Borders was awarded the "Airport Revenue News Best Concessions" prize in 2006 for the "Large Retailer Division," and in 2005, second place in the categories of "Best Airport Retailer" and "Retailer with the Highest Regard for Customer Service." In 2004, the Borders airport store division was named "Best Retail Specialty Brand Operator," and in 2003, ARN recognized Borders as the "2003 Best New Specialty Retail Concept," almost immediately after the first Borders-branded airport store opened in 2002. The ARN awards are the most prestigious in the industry with approximately 3,000 airport executives, consultants and concessionaires, along with an independent panel of judges, nominating and selecting airport retailers for the awards.

About Detroit Metro Airport

Detroit Metropolitan Airport's award-winning concession program has impressed travelers and industry groups alike. The airport's McNamara Terminal was recently honored in the 2007 Airport Revenue News (ARN) Concession Poll as: Best Overall Concession Program, Best Concession Management Team, Best Concession Program Design, and Airport with the Most Unique Services. DTW also finished first place among large North American airports in the categories of Best Food & Beverage Program and Best Retail Specialty Program, in Airports Council International - North America's (ACI-NA) 2006 Excellence in Concessions Contest. When the North Terminal concession program opens in 2008, the airport will house more than 120 world-class shops and restaurants airport-wide, and will offer one of the largest and most diverse airport concession programs in the world.

Detroit Metro Airport's new $431-million North Terminal will be Detroit's home to Air Canada, American Airlines, AirTran Airways, Frontier Airlines, Lufthansa German Airlines, Royal Jordanian Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Spirit Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, USA 3000, and charter airlines. Northwest Airlines and its SkyTeam(TM) partners AeroMexico, Air France, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, will remain in the McNamara Terminal.

The North Terminal Redevelopment Project is creating an estimated 3,200 new, local construction jobs. Upon completion of the new facility, the existing Smith and Berry terminals will be decommissioned -- making DTW one of the newest, most operationally-capable and efficient airports in North America. Together with the McNamara Terminal, which opened in 2002, DTW will soon feature two new terminals, nearly 150 gates, six jet runways, and two modern Federal Inspection Services facilities for international arrivals.

Established in 2002 by the Michigan State Legislature, Wayne County Airport Authority is an independent agency responsible for the operation of DTW and Willow Run Airport (YIP). Serving nearly 36 million passengers last year, DTW is the largest airport in Michigan and among the busiest air transportation hubs in the world. DTW's 17 airlines offer more than 1,200 non-stop flights per day to more than 160 destinations worldwide.
