Target (NYSE:TGT) announced today it is making a $1 million commitment of cash and product to provide immediate assistance with overall relief efforts for Hurricanes Ike and Gustav as well as other storms that have recently hit the southern U.S. The donation will be distributed among relief agencies such as the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army and Feeding America.
"This year's hurricane season has brought devastation that continues to drain the resources needed for relief and recovery," said Laysha Ward, president, Target Community Relations. "Target is committed to providing support to ensure that communities are able to recover as quickly as possible."
In addition to the 80,000 food and comfort kits Target donated to hurricane relief efforts last week, Target is also providing the following:
- 500 blankets and 500 pillows to the Emergency Operations Center of Texas;
- An additional 15,000 emergency food kits, which include items such as granola and protein bars and other snack items. The kits will be distributed in the Houston area;
- An additional 5,000 comfort kits to the Red Cross and Salvation Army. The comfort kits include toothpaste, toothbrush, body wash or bar soap, hand sanitizer and deodorant.
Target currently has 38 stores closed in Texas and will begin reopening as early as Saturday evening. Efforts are underway to account for team members and confirm their safety.
