James River Coal Company to Sell 1,500,000 Shares of Common Stock

RICHMOND, Va., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- James River Coal Company announced today that it has agreed to sell 1,500,000 shares, with an over-allotment option to sell up to an additional 225,000 shares, of its common stock in a public offering through UBS Investment Bank.

After this offering there will be approximately 27,401,703 shares of common stock outstanding (27,626,703 shares if the over-allotment option is exercise in full). The common stock is listed on the Nasdaq Global Market under the symbol "JRCC". The last reported sale price on the common stock on September 23, 2008 was $33.26 per share.

James River Coal Company mines, processes and sells bituminous, steam and industrial-grade coal primarily to electric utility companies and industrial customers. The Company's mining operations are managed through six operating subsidiaries located throughout eastern Kentucky and in southern Indiana.
