The Century Council, a national not-for-profit organization funded by distillers, is honoring select Attorneys General and State Legislators who have shown an outstanding commitment to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. Attorney General Troy King of Alabama was one of 13 partners to receive the honor for his ongoing dedication.
According to the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, past month consumption of alcohol has remained relatively unchanged since 2002. Last year nationwide, 28 percent of youth reported consuming alcohol in the past 30 days. Specifically in Alabama, 26 percent of youth reported consuming alcohol in the past 30 days. Understanding the scope of this national epidemic, this year's award recipients joined The Century Council to help educate youth and their parents from middle school to college-aged students about responsible decision-making concerning beverage alcohol.
Attorney General King has been a longtime leader and partner in the fight against drunk driving and underage drinking. He has implemented The Century Council's Ask, Listen, Learn: Kids and Alcohol Don't Mix program in middle schools multiple times across his state. The Ask, Listen, Learn program recognizes that the key to stopping underage drinking is communication between parents and their children, and it encourages parents to talk with their children early and often about the dangers and risks associated with underage drinking. In 2008, Attorney General King also taped a drunk driving public service announcement as well as worked on legislation to strengthen drunk driving.
The Century Council is a not-for-profit organization funded by distillers including Bacardi U.S.A., Inc.; Beam Global Wine & Spirits, Inc; Brown-Forman; Constellation Brands, Inc.; DIAGEO; Hood River Distillers, Inc.; and Sidney Frank Importing Co.
