Terry O'Sullivan, General President of LIUNA, today made the following statement on President-elect Obama's Plan to Build America:
After yesterday's jobs report showed more than 1.2 million construction workers out of a job and unemployment in the industry at 12.7 percent, LIUNA called for an economic stimulus package that matches the size of our economic crisis. A bold plan to create jobs is called for, because more than anything, working people need paychecks.
The plan that President-elect Barack Obama laid out today will put millions of Americans back to work building our roads, bridges and schools and creating the foundation for a new green economy. It is exactly the leadership we hoped for when Barack Obama promised LIUNA members earlier this year that he would be the "build America President."
President-elect Obama's plan has the full support of the working men and women who build America and the half-million members of LIUNA stand ready to fight to make sure Obama's job creation plan succeeds, including utilizing LIUNA's nationwide training programs to help transition working people into these new jobs. With a "build America" President's leadership and vision, we will build America, so America works.
The members of LIUNA - the Laborers' International Union of North America - are on the forefront of the construction industry, a powerhouse of workers who are proud to build America.
