Jamie Dimon, Larry Ellison, and David Axelrod Named to BusinessWeek's List of 'The Best Managers of 2008'

NEW YORK, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan, Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison, and the Obama campaign's Chief Strategist David Axelrod are among the list of BusinessWeek's "Best Managers of 2008." The twelve managers recognized by BusinessWeek as the best managers of 2008 have not only ridden out the crisis so far but also gleaned valuable, often profitable, lessons from it. Also named to the list are Costco CEO Jim Sinegal, Hewlett-Packard's Mark Hurd, and Irene Rosenfeld, CEO of Kraft Foods.

In addition to singling out 12 executives who did a remarkable job of navigating stormy waters, BusinessWeek also identified the 12 worst managers of the year. Not unexpectedly, these managers either helped to set the economic crisis in motion or managed to make a bad situation worse: James Cayne, former Chief Executive of Bear Stearns, was reportedly off playing golf and bridge during the worst days of the crisis; in one year, Sam Zell, CEO of Tribune, went from promising to save the newspaper business to orchestrating the largest print media bankruptcy ever; and former UBS Chairman Marcel Ospel helped make the Swiss bank one of the biggest subprime casualties.

"The Best and Worst Managers of 2008" is featured in BusinessWeek's "Managing Through a Crisis" special report, which also takes a look at how BusinessWeek's previous picks for best and worst managers panned out, including Gerald Levin, Dennis Kozlowski, and Hank Greenberg. The special report is featured in BusinessWeek's January 19, 2009 issue, on newsstands January 9th, and online at http://www.businessweek.com/magazine.
