New 2go Convertible Classmate PC, targeted for education, functions in both laptopand tablet mode, features resistive touch technology, built-in collaborative andWeb-centric software; will sell for $549
CTL Corporation today announced its new 2go Convertible Classmate PC. This is one of the first touch-enabled netbooks available in the U.S. It is designed for use as a laptop or a tablet PC, and is purpose-built for youth education. It will be available through major online retailers and at www.ctlcorp.com.
The 2go Convertible Classmate PC extends CTL’s netbook family - to three platforms - and further solidifies its position in the education arena. With the new device, CTL continues to lead in the netbook category with solutions that are reliable and high performing, and supportive of the most popular usage and learning applications. At $549, the 2go Convertible Classmate PC also is one of the lowest-priced tablets on the market.
Like the clamshell-style product (the 2go Classmate PC and the Model IL1A), the 2go Convertible Classmate PC offers important ultra-portability features. It is small (8.9-in. wide) and lightweight (2.8 lbs). It is also designed for kids and is able to withstand accidental drops (drop proof to 50cm). It features a liquid-resistant keyboard, and a carrying handle (removable) for usage anywhere.
“While the 2go Convertible Classmate PC can function as a netbook-style laptop, its uniqueness is that it is a tablet device as well—it is one of the first netbooks with touch screen capability on the market, and we expect it will be very well received as a versatile and cost-effective learning device,” said Erik Stromquist, executive vice president of CTL Corporation.
Key among the 2go Convertible’s features is an 8.9-in. LCD screen (with 1024 x 600 resolution). The screen can be rotated and inverted, with all such movements supported by a high-performing accelerometer. An accelerometer is an innovative built-in device that senses in which direction the tablet is oriented and adjusts the user’s point of view. The screen features resistive touch technology that also recognizes an individual’s handwriting and supports digital writing and drawing. A stylus is provided for navigation (e.g., select, move, drag and re-size), and for utilizing the 2go’s many built-in software capabilities, including an E-Reader, with scrolling, panning, text-to-clipboard copying and zooming, as well as powerful and useful note-taking tools.
The system is equipped with an innovative Quick Launcher. This also is a touch-enabled feature that provides shortcuts to a number of other pre-loaded applications, including powerful collaboration software, as well as to a number of Internet-centric capabilities such as web researching, e-mail and instant messaging, and video, and MP3 streaming.
"CTL is one of the forerunners in providing netbooks designed for education in the United States. We are pleased to work with CTL over the years, starting with their work on the 2go Classmate PC, and on their new offering of the 2go Convertible Classmate PC," said Lila Ibrahim, general manager of Intel’s Emerging Market Platforms Group which developed the reference design.
Hardware features include a 1.6GHz Intel® Atom™ 270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a shock-mounted 60GB hard drive, 802.1 b/g/n Wi-Fi and a six-cell battery (providing over five hours of continuous usage). The screen is topped by a camera that is movable.
