Arch Coal Subsidiaries Earn Three State Environmental Achievement Awards in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, W. Va., Feb. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Arch Coal, Inc. today announced that Coal-Mac, Inc. and Mingo Logan Coal Company have earned three top state honors for wildlife preservation and environmental excellence.

Ducks Unlimited presented the West Virginia Wetlands Award to Coal-Mac for wetlands development in Mingo and Logan counties. The project efforts included erecting duck nesting boxes near the wetlands with a local Boy Scout troop to promote wild duck habitat.

The West Virginia Division of Environmental Protection also presented awards to Coal-Mac and Mingo Logan. Coal-Mac demonstrated a special commitment to environmental protection by exceeding engineering and reclamation requirements for its Pine Creek coal refuse impoundment in Logan County. Mingo Logan earned statewide recognition for overall exemplary dismantling and land reclamation of the retired Monclo Preparation Plant and the related coal transportation infrastructure in Boone County.

"Congratulations to the employees of Coal-Mac and Mingo Logan," said Arch's President and Chief Operating Officer John W. Eaves. "They are proof positive that we can help meet the world's growing energy needs in economically, environmentally and socially responsible ways."

Coal-Mac, Inc. and Mingo Logan Coal Company are wholly owned subsidiaries of Arch Coal, Inc. Coal-Mac is located near Holden, W.Va., and employs approximately 300 people. Mingo Logan's Mountain Laurel complex is located near Sharples, W.Va., with a total workforce of roughly 325. Collectively, Coal-Mac and Mountain Laurel have earned the U.S. Department of Interior's National Good Neighbor Award three times in five years.

St. Louis-based Arch Coal is one of the nation's largest coal producers, with revenues of $3.0 billion in 2008. The company's core business is providing U.S. power generators with cleaner-burning, low-sulfur coal for electric generation. Through its national network of mines, Arch supplies the fuel for approximately 6 percent of the electricity generated in the United States.
