SANTIAGO, Chile, March 9 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LAN Airlines S.A. and its subsidiaries ("LAN" or "the Company") , one of the leading airlines in Latin America, today reported its preliminary monthly traffic statistics and punctuality indicators for February 2009.
System passenger traffic for February increased 8.2% as capacity rose 9.7%. As a result, the Company's load factor decreased 1.2 points to 80.0%. International passenger traffic accounted for approximately 68% of total passenger traffic.
Domestic passenger traffic in Chile, Argentina and Peru rose 31.1% as capacity increased 33.2%. As a consequence, the domestic load factor for the month decreased 1.2 points to 78.1%. Strong growth in domestic traffic was driven by an expansion of operations in the three domestic markets.
International passenger traffic for February remained unchanged as capacity increased 1.2%. Accordingly, the international passenger load factor for the month decreased 0.9 points to 80.9%. International capacity grew driven mainly by an increase in operations on certain regional routes.
Cargo traffic decreased 19.8% as capacity decreased 10.3%. As a consequence, the cargo load factor decreased 7.8 points to 65.1%. Cargo traffic decreased mainly as a result of a slowdown in Latin American import markets, as well as lower exports of perishable goods from Chile and Peru compared to February 2008.
During February, 91.4% of the Company's total flights left on time, based on a fifteen-minute standard (all departures leaving within fifteen minutes of the scheduled departure time are considered as "on-time"). This represented an increase of 10.5 points compared to the same month of 2008.
