SolFocus today announced that it showcased a display of its concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) solar technology to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of his tour of the 2009 Green California Exposition. The Governor examined a panel from a SolFocus 1100S system, which achieves industry-leading panel efficiency of 25%, resulting in systems which yield high energy output, maximize land use, and support sustainable environmental practices.
“As CPV technology takes hold in Europe and begins to commercialize in the United States, SolFocus sees California as an ideal market for the deployment of CPV solar systems,” said Nancy Hartsoch, vice president of marketing for SolFocus, who presented the CPV display to the Governor. “CPV systems offer 75 percent higher efficiency of traditional silicon-based photovoltaic panels, making them an ideal fit for sunny California regions looking for cost-effective, sustainable energy solutions.”
The company’s CPV design employs a system of reflective optics to concentrate sunlight 500 times onto small, highly efficient solar cells. The SolFocus 1100S uses approximately 1/1,000th of the active, expensive solar cell material compared to traditional photovoltaic panels.
The three-day event was held at the Sacramento Convention Center and featured over 200 exhibitors and began March 16, is designed to connect individuals with responsibility for purchasing within state and local governments to commercial retailers who sell green products.
