Engineering News-Record Names Bernard Amadei, Founder of Engineers Without Borders, Recipient of 44th Award of Excellence

NEW YORK, March 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Engineering News-Record (ENR), McGraw-Hill Construction's prestigious publication and website and part of The McGraw-Hill Companies , today presented its Award of Excellence to Bernard Amadei, professor of civil engineering, director of the Engineering for Developing Communities Program at the University of Colorado, and founder of Engineers Without Borders. More than 1,000 construction industry leaders gather at the New York Marriott Marquis in New York City for the 44th annual black-tie awards dinner tonight to honor Amadei and ENR's 25 Top Newsmakers.

Amadei has made a major impact on impoverished communities, young engineers, and the construction industry, changing industry's expectations for a motivated and enlightened workforce and assisting needy global communities. What began as an overseas field trip in 2001 for Amadei and his students is now a life-changing, global phenomenon, with 300 chapters and more than 12,000 student and professional members, who work with developing-world communities to install small-scale water, renewable energy, sanitation, housing, telecommunications, and other sustainable projects.

"Bernard Amadei has changed the way students and the world look at engineering," said Janice L. Tuchman, editor-in-chief of ENR. "We are proud to honor him for his contributions to the field, which have made a significant difference in the construction industry and in developing nations."

The recipient of the Award of Excellence and the Top 25 Newsmakers, also honored at today's award ceremonies, were selected from a large pool of nominees judged by ENR editors to have made the most important contributions to the industry and the public in 2008. ENR magazine and its website, ENR.com, are the primary trusted sources of news, analysis, commentary and data for the building, design and construction industry.

Sponsors of the 44th annual Award of Excellence include AECOM, American Society of Civil Engineers, The Associated General Contractors of America, the Construction Management Association of America, Hill International, HNTB, FIGG, Flatiron, Solibri, and Turner Construction.
