America's “civil rights to silver rights” entrepreneur and empowerment leader for the underserved, John Hope Bryant proved nay-sayers wrong who chimed, “nobody cares about this topic.” Starting a fledging nonprofit in 1992, following the worst civil unrest in U.S. history, focused on “financial literacy,” economic empowerment, and the poor as an emerging market, with one employee and an annual budget of $65,000; later turning it into a multi-million dollar concern with 400 private sector partners, 1,500 nonprofit organizations and schools, and 100 government partners in 68 major U.S. cities and five provinces in South Africa. In 16 years, Operation HOPE has raised more than $500 million in its pursuit of educating, assisting and inspiring the next generation of global stakeholders and empowering more than one million adults, including 360,000 youth in financial literacy. Inspired by his work, the President of the United States moved to make financial literacy the policy of the U.S. federal government, and likewise, inspired by his work, Congress this month passed Bill (H1325) requiring financial literacy counseling for borrowers of student loans. Raised in South Central Los Angeles, he spent six months of his life homeless by age 18 and has since traveled the world tirelessly promoting a sense of hope, self-esteem, dignity, and opportunity for the under-served. Bryant’s work to eradicate poverty has garnered him more than 400 awards and citations including the Use Your Life Award by Oprah Winfrey, and was named a “Community Hero” by People Magazine. He’s a recognized world authority on financial issues, book author, and national community leader cited by the past four sitting U.S. presidents for his work to impact low wealth communities across America, and an active advisor to the past two U.S. presidents. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton described Mr. Bryant in his bestseller GIVING saying, “John Bryant is a 41 year-old whirlwind of ideas and action. Lean, intense, focused, and completely positive in his belief in the potential of poor people to prosper, with ‘a hand up and not a hand out.’”
