John P. Calamos, Sr., Discussed Benefits of Issuing Convertible Securities at Milken Institute Global Conference 2009 / Panel Also Explored Investment Opportunities and Convertible Arbitrage

NAPERVILLE, Ill., April 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Speaking at the prestigious Milken Institute Global Conference, John P. Calamos, Sr., Chairman, CEO and Co-Chief Investment Officer of Calamos Investments, told the audience that he has not seen the current opportunities in convertible securities in more than 30 years of investment management experience.

"The recent systemic selloff has created a very rare opportunity for long-term investors," Calamos said. "Traditionally used as a low-risk equity alternative, convertibles can be effectively used to provide an improved risk/reward profile within a defensive equity objective - particularly in today's highly volatile markets," he said.

Hosting a panel entitled "Convertible Securities in Today's Markets," Calamos led a discussion that outlined:

-- For corporations: the potential benefits of issuing convertibles to raise capital, investor appetite in the current environment, typical uses of raised proceeds, and terms of recent convertible issues. -- For institutional investors and advisers: where convertibles fit into various asset allocation models, including how they can be used as defensive equity, enhanced fixed-income or alternative equity investment strategies. -- For all market participants: what the future holds for convertible arbitrage strategies, including how they can play a constructive role on a non- or low-leverage basis.

"Convertibles are a wonderful but often misunderstood security. Once again, the convertible market is very active, presenting compelling opportunities for issuers and investors alike."
