Army and the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum to Honor WWII Vets
Thousands of people from across the nation will converge in Abilene, Kansas from June 5 - 7 to participate in the 65th Anniversary National Commemoration of the D-Day invasion. The U.S. Army’s Freedom Team Salute program, one of the partners in this year’s event with the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, will be honoring scores of Army Veterans and other individuals with Commendations.
“It is important for us to be here,” said Colonel David Griffith, Director of Freedom Team Salute. “We’re conducting five formal ceremonies in two days to recognize individuals with Freedom Team Salute Commendations. Never in our history have we presided over so many ceremonies in such a short period of time. It only underscores the value of the program and the essential bond between our Army, our Families, our Veterans, and our Community.”
In addition to the Freedom Team Salute ceremonies, attendees at the D-Day commemoration will have the opportunity to meet with a group of American and German Soldiers from the WWII History Center in El Dorado, Kansas. Some of the many other activities include the 10th Mountain Living History Display Group from Colorado, and the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of Kansas City, Mo. The weekend schedule also includes a Veterans Salute parade on Saturday through downtown Abilene.

The program also honors and recognizes the Parents, Spouses, Employers, and Supporters of Active Duty, Army Reserve, and National Guard Soldiers. The Commendations consist of a personalized letter and certificate signed by the Secretary of the Army and the Army Chief of Staff. Honorees also receive official Army lapel pins and The Salute, a quarterly newsletter that contains information on military history and today’s Army. To date, Freedom Team Salute has honored over 1.9 million Army Veterans, Spouses, Parents, Supporters, and Employees.
