Retro trends from the '80s shape back-to-school styles for area teens
This fall, as teens and twenty somethings head back to school, clothing trends are heading "Back to the Future," mimicking the styles rocked by the fashion conscious in the 1980s. But although the look of the season is full of expression, local Plato's Closet locations are recommending a few tips to keep young adults from looking like retro-fashion victims.
"Parents may find it hard to believe, but many of the punk rock and heavy metal themes popular in the '80s are reappearing in the must-have looks for this fall," said Renae Blonigen, director of Plato’s Closet. She goes on to suggest that teens and twenties keep the following fashion elements in mind when emulating the glitz and glam of the '80s:
- All American Denim - Dressed up or down, denim always looks good. From skinny to straight and boyfriend to flare, denim remains top on the hot list.
- Heavy Metals - Bright colors are shoved aside in favor of black, metallics and grays this fall, all of which give outfits a rock-star feel. Black jeans will be en vogue and will look best when paired with a solid, shiny top.
- Fitted Finds- When it comes to the cut of your pants, skinny jeans and fitted styles complete the quintessential '80s look. Skirts and dresses should be short but not too short, with the ideal length hitting at mid-thigh.
- Short Jackets - This season the jacket to wear should be cropped. Tweeds give crop jackets texture without weighing them down. Leather jackets can give any outfit an '80s feel.
- Classic Pieces - Layering is an important part of achieving the season's look, so there are certainly staples that should always be on hand. Fitted tees, leggings and a long cardigan sweater are all fundamentals for the fall.
- DIY Accents - When it comes to accessories, says Blonigen, young adults should not hesitate to be their own designers and get creative. Keep in mind that a great accessory or two can change the entire look of an outfit.
