San Antonio isset to host the ASMBS Foundation and Obesity Action Coalition’s (OAC) annual Walk from Obesity on October 4, 2009 at San Antonio’s legendary Pearl Brewery. The Bariatric Medical Institute of Texas (“BMI of Texas”) is serving as the local lead sponsor for the San Antonio Walk, which is part of a national event held in cities across the nation to raise money for research, education, prevention and treatment of the life-threatening disease of obesity. The mission of the Walk is to bring together all who are affected by obesity to draw national attention to the need for awareness, treatment and advocacy initiatives.
“More than 2/3 of all Americans are overweight or obese and San Antonio is regularly recognized as one of America’s fattest cities. We are honored to host San Antonio’s Walk from Obesity in recognition of our battle against this epidemic,” said Dr. Terive Duperier, a bariatric surgeon and co-founder of the Bariatric Medical Institute of Texas. “Our goal is to continue educating people in South Texas about the prevalence of obesity in our community and to help raise money to fund important research funding.”
BMI of Texas, located in San Antonio's Medical Center area, helps patients achieve their weight loss goals through various surgical procedures including gastric bypass, adjustable gastric band and sleeve gastrectomy. Additionally, the surgeons perform a full spectrum of advanced laparoscopic procedures, including laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication (anti-reflux surgery), laparoscopic colon surgery, laparoscopic pancreatic surgery, and laparoscopic hernia surgeries.
The cost to participate in the non-competitive Walk from Obesity and support all those affected by obesity is $25. Registration is free for children 12 and under. To register for the Walk from Obesity, please visit www.walkfromobesity.com and click on the “Join A Walk” button.
Registration begins at 8 am on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at the Pearl Brewery and the Walk will begin at 9 am along the beautiful new extension of San Antonio’s historic River Walk. As a non-competitive walk, participants can choose a variety of distances to cover during their support of the event.
Funds raised through this event will support the ASMBS Foundation and the OAC in their efforts to increase research funding for obesity, improve awareness of the negative stigma associated with obesity and provide educational resources for all those affected by this disease.
