GERMANTOWN, Md., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), the global leader in broadband satellite networks and services, today announced that its Brazilian operating unit, Hughes do Brasil, now has 10,000 Hughes broadband satellite terminals in operation, delivering HughesNet services to a variety of market segments.
"We are proud to have achieved this significant milestone in just a few short years since the launch of HughesNet in Brazil," said Delio Morais, president of Hughes do Brazil. "It's a testament to our high quality of service across an extensive satellite footprint, including areas that were challenged previously to obtain cost-effective and reliable broadband access. Whether it's a classroom in rural Brazil or a banking center in Rio de Janeiro, customers from diverse segments such as education, retail, automotive, oil/gas, and government, count on Hughes to meet their broadband needs, regardless of geography."
Retail locations make up almost 20 percent of the broadband satellite terminals in service delivering Internet/intranet connectivity, point-of-sales, voice, and video applications. Over 20 percent provide basic and back-up connectivity to financial centers, while an additional 2,100 educational sites deliver interactive distance learning applications to more than 200,000 students in 4,000 remote classrooms. In the telecommunications market segment, over 3,200 Hughes terminals are used to complement services by terrestrial network providers.
For more than 20 years since it developed and delivered the first Ku-band VSAT, Hughes has consistently maintained the position of worldwide market leader in satellite networks and services. These networks provide rapid, reliable transmission of data, voice, video, and multimedia applications to virtually an unlimited number of sites over continent-wide areas covered by geostationary satellites.
