U.S. Concrete Wins GreenSite Award for California Academy of Sciences

HOUSTON, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- U.S. Concrete, Inc., announced today that it has won the 2009 GreenSite Award in the Institutional category for outstanding sustainability practices in concrete construction, an award bestowed by The Concrete Producer, a Hanley Wood Business Media Company. The award was for the production of environmentally-friendly concrete in the construction of The California Academy of Sciences building in San Francisco, California.

Environmentally-friendly technologies and sustainability are becoming crucial building practices in the competitive world of concrete construction. To recognize innovative contributions to green building, Concrete Construction Magazine and The Concrete Producer Magazine created a new award: GreenSite Project of the Year.

The California Academy of Sciences is one of the largest and most renowned institutions of natural history, science and culture in the world. Sustainability and conservation have long been a part of the Academy's history, and this innovative new building serves as a tangible example of environmentally-superior construction at the forefront of sustainability design, receiving Platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED program. Environmentally-friendly concrete formed an integral part of the building's construction and on-going sustainable system. San Francisco-based Central Concrete Supply Co., Inc., a subsidiary of U.S. Concrete, Inc., provided approximately 35,000 cubic yards of concrete, utilizing its environmentally-friendly technology (EF Technology(TM)) concrete mixes.

All of the GreenSite Award winners will be featured in the October/November issues of The Concrete Producer and Concrete Construction Magazines. The California Academy of Sciences project slideshow will also be showcased on their Web sites, http://www.theconcreteproducer.com/ and http://www.concreteconstruction.net/, and GreenSite Award projects will also be displayed at World of Concrete Tradeshow, February 2-5, 2010.

EF Technology mixes utilize supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash and slag, which are reclaimed by-products from iron mills and coal-fired power plants which may have ultimately ended up in landfills. U.S. Concrete estimates that their concrete mix designs prevented one million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) from entering the environment over the past three years.
