LED Lighting Brightens Holiday Season with Energy Savings

CHICAGO, Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Through sponsorship of a lighting exchange at Lincoln Park Zoo and a number of festivals across northern Illinois, ComEd is encouraging customers to adopt energy-saving habits that help them save money.

"Holiday traditions provide an opportunity to celebrate the season and highlight energy conservation by encouraging use of festive lighting that is cost-effective and environmentally friendly," said Calvin Butler, senior vice president, Corporate Affairs, ComEd.

LED (light emitting diode) holiday lights can pay for themselves in four to five years as a result of electricity savings and use up to 90 percent less energy than traditional light strands. For a typical holiday tree illuminated with 1,100 lights and operating for six hours everyday of the week, residents can expect to save up to $8 per month, or 70 kilowatt-hours of electricity, by using LED lighting. LED holiday lighting also is very weather resistant, durable for outdoor use and comes in a variety of colors. ComEd is currently offering a $2.00 discount on each LED holiday light set purchased at the ComEd Online Store at ComEd.com. The offer is good through December 31, 2009.

ComEd also is hosting an energy efficient holiday lighting exchange on Nov. 27 at Lincoln Park Zoo's annual ZooLights festival. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. ComEd will offer the first 500 people two sets of energy efficient LED lights, if they trade in two sets of traditional incandescent holiday light strands. In addition to the LED lighting exchange and discounts, ComEd continues its tradition of hosting local holiday festivals for families to enjoy including:

ComEd Festival of Trees

From Nov. 23 to 29, the ComEd Festival of Trees at the historic Rialto Theater in Joliet will offer a weeklong holiday extravaganza with lights, holiday movies and more. For more information, visit rialtosquare.com.

Chicago Botanic Garden's Wonderland Express

Customers can visit the Chicago Botanic Garden's Wonderland Express, which features beautiful outdoor decorations completely lit by energy-efficient LEDs and a 10,000-square-foot indoor holiday exhibition featuring a miniature train chugging through Chicago landmarks, flowering plants and waterfalls. Visit chicagobotanic.org to learn more about the event running from Nov. 27 to Jan. 3. Residents can visit comed.com to redeem a buy one/get one free coupon to the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Brookfield Zoo's Holiday Magic

For the eighth consecutive year, ComEd is the presenting sponsor of the 28th Annual Holiday Magic Lights Festival at Brookfield Zoo. This festival opens Dec. 5 and runs weekends through Dec. 31. Celebrate the holiday season with family-friendly activities at Holiday Magic, featuring nearly one million twinkling lights illuminating the zoo's walkways. Residents can visit comed.com to redeem a buy one/get one free coupon to the zoo.

ComEd's environmental initiatives are part of Exelon 2020, an aggressive environmental strategy by ComEd's parent company, Exelon, to reduce, offset, or displace more than 15 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions per year by 2020.

Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) is a unit of Chicago-based Exelon Corporation , one of the nation's largest electric utilities with approximately 5.4 million customers. ComEd provides service to approximately 3.8 million customers across Northern Illinois, or 70 percent of the state's population.
