Myers Mermel, a declared Republican candidate for New York State Lieutenant Governor, stands with eleven governors that have declared that they plan to sue the federal government over the healthcare reform legislation. Mermel states that, "The health care reform legislation passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last night clearly violates the U.S. Constitution and infringes on each state's sovereignty.I call on the New York State Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, to join Florida's lawsuit."
Mermel believes, "The reforms contravene state powers under the Bill of Rights, and Congress lacks authority to regulate interstate commerce to force people to buy insurance. If the Attorney General does not join with the Floridians and the ten other states, I call upon him to justify his decision on Constitutional grounds. His rationale cannot be the economy, as additional taxes will constrain the New York economy, and it cannot be cost, as the reforms will increase the high price New Yorkers already payfor insurance."
A fiscal conservative, deeply concerned about federal mandates and overall spending in New York State, Mermel is committed to real health care reform. This would include creating effective interstate competition, rewarding initiatives, promoting innovation, and laying a foundation for an efficient health care system that is sustainable in future years.
