Vulcan Materials Receives Favorable Ruling for Medina County Quarry

SAN ANTONIO, April 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Vulcan Materials Company , the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates, received a favorable ruling this week from the 5th Circuit Court regarding its proposed quarry in Medina County, Texas. The ruling upheld decisions previously made by the Surface Transportation Board and the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and denied the Medina County Environmental Action Association's (MCEAA) petition for review.

"We are very pleased to have received this fair and thorough ruling from the 5th Circuit Court," said Darren Hicks, Director of Human Resources and Administration, Southwest Division, Vulcan Materials. "On every point, the Court unanimously disagreed with the MCEAA and accepted our case. This decision is a major victory for Vulcan in Medina County and diminishes MCEAA's attempts to delay or obstruct quarry construction altogether."

With respect to next steps, Hicks said, "The recession has hit our industry hard but we expect to continue making progress on our Medina quarry and railroad project. As the economy recovers we'll expand our activities there considerably."

"This ruling further validates the diligent effort we have put forth in Medina County over the past ten years to ensure the project is in compliance with all environmental requirements and regulations," Hicks said. "We are ready to move past the courts and focus on bringing economic benefits to the community and citizens of Medina County."

When fully operational, Vulcan's Medina County quarry will provide much needed basic infrastructure materials for the Texas economy and over 50 jobs at the site, about $600,000 in new tax revenues for Medina County, and an estimated local economic impact annually of $1,000,000.
