Northern Distribution Network Wins Supply Chain Excellence Award
The Supply Chain Council (SCC) has awarded the2010 Award for Supply Chain Operational Excellence in the Defense Sector to the Northern Distribution Network.
The Northern Distribution Network (NDN) is a joint initiative of multiple agencies within the United States Department of Defense led by the U.S. Transportation Command, including the U.S. Central Command, U.S. European Command, U.S. Department of State, and the Defense Logistics Agency. The NDN project identified and established new distribution routes that connect Baltic and Caspian ports with Afghanistan via Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus. The flexible supply line, which relies entirely on commercial shippers, now serves as an alternative to the vulnerable ground route that follows the Karachi-Peshawar road through Pakistan that had been used exclusively since 2001.
"By aligning distribution processes to a common set of performance-based SCOR metrics, NDN has established an effective supplement and viable alternative to existing Pakistan supply lines," said SCC Executive Director Joseph Francis. "NDN is a stellar example of how to use SCOR to enhance supply chain velocity, precision, visibility and efficiency to bolster coalition forces."
Now that NDN is in full operation, the entire region directly contributes to the re-supply of coalition forces and has a larger economic and strategic stake in the success of coalition operations in Afghanistan. By opening up new commercial distribution routes, NDN also creates an opportunity for a more sustainable flow of goods that could speed economic progress in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.
The Supply Chain Council Awards for Excellence in Supply Chain Operations and Management are designed to encourage the continuous advancement of the supply chain management body of knowledge and the sharing of that information between organizations.
