Doing business in emerging markets
China, India, Brazil, Japan and Israel remain as a few of the bright spots in the global financial crisis. While VC investments in medtech and life science companies have slowed, medtech companies are demonstrating a healthy appetite for funding and launching novel, early stage technologies in these markets. CEO Panel – Pulse of the industry
Heinrich Christen of Ernst & Young will moderate as panelists explore the key trends and findings of Ernst & Young's half-yearly update to "Pulse of the Industry: Global Medical Technology Report," its second annual industry publication. EU medtech update on regulation, pricing and reimbursement
In response to revisions made to the EU medical device directive in March 2010, this panel provides the opportunity to check that you are in full compliance with authorities and notified bodies. Moderator Hubertus Rosery of AiM, and speakers Brigitte Casteels-Rappagliosi, Stryker Europe; Fabien Roy, Hogan & Hartson; and Harry van Vugt, KEMA Quality will discuss the most recent updates to the reimbursement and pricing system from EU healthcare agencies. These industry experts share their experiences and success stories on gaining or maintaining market share and achieving reimbursement as early as possible.
Accelerating telemedicine and eHealth markets in Europe
Moderated by Uwe Buddrus, Data Information Intelligence, this panel addresses the European Commission's 2007 report on lead market opportunities for eHealth and proposed actions aiming to accelerate and develop the European eHealth market, with the intention of increasing benefits and simultaneously developing the quality of health products and services. Speakers include Felix Brand of Personal MedSystems, Klaus Juffernbruch of Cisco Systems; Richard Rees Davies of GE Healthcare; Michael Reilly of Orange Healthcare UK; and Jens Seeliger of Intel Digital Health Group. As leaders and stakeholders in the field, they will discuss the growing demand, market growth opportunities and structural barriers delaying successful market breakthrough, including reducing market fragmentation and interoperability; improving legal certainty and consumer acceptance; facilitating access to funding; and improving procurement activities.
Regenerative medicine, orthopedics and advanced materials
This panel will focus on strategies and pivotal tactics for commercialization of regenerative medicine and novel products by building on successful advances in orthopedics, wound healing, stem cells and other cellular therapies. Gil Beyen of TiGenix; Paul Borm of MagnaMedics; Ian Brown of RepRegen; and Leanna M. Caron of Genzyme BioSurgery will discuss what is really groundbreaking with biological and new materials and whether or not these can be cultivated into sustainable products and businesses. Moderated by Timothy J. Haines of Abingworth Management.
Entry into the US market
Reinhard Merz, TCG moderates this workshop on bringing medtech products to the US marketplace. Speakers Robert Keefer of TCG and Albrecht Windelband of Abtswinder Naturheilmittel, will address how customers make buying decisions in the unique reimbursement and insurance environment of the US market, as well as US regulatory requirements and processes, product liability issues, cultural issues and the adequate timeframe for ultimate success. More specifically, this workshop will examine the current downturn and address how this may affect product launching in the largest medical device market in the world.
Investment Panel – From the eyes of the funders and funded
Olivier Litzka, Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners, moderates a panel on current medtech investing against the backdrop of global economic difficulties. Speakers will address the view for investment and dealmaking for the year ahead, as well as stimulus funding and exit strategies. Speakers include Nissim Darvish, OrbiMed Israel; Antoine Papernik, Sofinnova Partners; Helmut J. Straubinger, JenaValve; and Elmar Thoene, DZ Bank.
The future way: Prevention, screening, early diagnosis and IVDs
This panel will address how recent developments in the industry will carry into the future of healthcare—from new healthcare reform and the containment of medical expenses to technological and medical advances. A new, strong consensus in favor of personal wellness brings considerable benefits—for consumers, healthcare professionals, employers and taxpayers. Moderator Ashley Yeo of Informa is joined by speakers Alan Davies, GE Healthcare; Janke Dittmer, Philips Healthcare Incubator; and Martin Huber, Siemens and THESEUS Forschungsprogramm. Speakers will address the ways in which policy and practical changes could affect the future of healthcare and how a greater emphasis on prevention, screening, early diagnosis and use of IVDs, will shape its evolution.
Interventional cardiology: Mitigating risk and maximizing rewards
Interventional cardiology can be a complicated landscape, with current diagnosis, investigation, and management of patients with cardiovascular disease, while also addressing development requirements for interventional cardiology devices. Speakers David Chilvers of NHS Innovations London; Eric Le Royer of Endosense and Stefan Thamasett of Berlin Heart along with moderator Marion Jung of Earlybird Venture Capital address some of these complexities.
