Community Invited to Attend Development Workshops
SunCal, the company leading the effort to revitalize the shuttered Alameda Naval Air Station, has signed a labor agreement and is launching a public outreach process to highlight benefits of the proposed development and build community support.
"We want to re-introduce ourselves to the Alameda community and outline what the future of Alameda Point should and can be," said Frank Faye, Chief Operating Officer for SunCal. "Everyone can agree that the full potential of this property should be realized. The more people can get involved, the better this project will ultimately be. We want the community to have a voice and be invested in what can be achieved at Alameda Point."
To that end, SunCal has activated a new website, www.seealamedapoint.com, and has begun hosting community forums to discuss the scope and details of the development. SunCal has also completed a Project Labor Agreement with leading trade unions in the East Bay to secure thousands of jobs for organized labor.
"As a longtime Alamedan and an advocate for working men and women, I can say that this project has everything that we need to move our community forward and turn a liability into an opportunity," said Andrew Slivka with the Alameda County Carpenters Union. "This development has the full support of the building trades and we're confident that Alameda residents will support it as well."
Alameda City Councilman and mayoral candidate Frank Matarrese praised SunCal's decision to enter into a project labor agreement with local labor unions for the Alameda Point project.
"I'm glad SunCal finally decided to follow my request to sign a project labor agreement with local labor units," Matarrese said in a statement. "PLA's are good for our Alameda and Bay Area union families. They make good business sense as well."
The plan for the former Navy base will transform about 1,700 acres, roughly a third of Alameda Island. SunCal plans to build an innovative, Peter Calthorpe-designed mixed-use, transit-oriented community which features an array of housing types for a variety of income brackets and community recreational and athletic facilities as well.
The development will encourage and make convenient for residents a variety of public transit options.
The company has designed a new transit hub that will be sited near a relocated Alameda-Oakland ferry terminal that utilizes the former Navy base's seaplane lagoon facility. A public marina will be located near the seaplane lagoon as well.
Likewise, the development will feature select retail and entertainment venues as well as commercial office space.
In addition to featuring some of the most stunning views of San Francisco available, the entire Alameda Point community will be situated next to a federal wildlife refuge which will further enhance the community's quality of life.
