AUSTIN, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 05/26/10 -- State Representative Dwayne Bohac (R-Houston) was recently recognized as a "Champion for Children with Dyslexia" by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA) for his efforts to pass legislation that strengthened and promoted high standards for therapists and practitioners who work with children who have dyslexia.
During the 81st Session of the Texas Legislature Dwayne Bohac was a Joint Author of House Bill 461, which established licensing criteria for those who work with children with dyslexia and other written language disorders. These uniform standards further protect parents and children who place their trust in members of the field of multisensory structured language education.
"As a father of four I understand the importance of promoting high standards for those who help children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities," said Bohac. "Correctly identifying and helping students with these disabilities will help them progress with their education and ultimately help them throughout their entire life."
As a result of House Bill 461 those wishing to become a licensed dyslexia practitioner or therapist will have to complete certain requirements that will ensure the highest standards across the state.
This award from ALTA comes on the heels of awards from other education groups who have recognized Bohac for his leadership in education. Texas PTA named Bohac to their statewide "Honor Roll" earlier this year and his colleagues in the Texas House of Representatives presented him with the "Education Advocate Award." Additionally, numerous groups have praised Bohac across the state including: the West Houston Chamber of Commerce, Spring Branch ISD, Houston ISD, Collaborative for Children and the Children's Assessment Center.
"We remain grateful for the role you played in supporting our work and the citizens of Texas who are affected by dyslexia and related disorders," said Michelle Bufkin, President of ALTA, of Rep. Bohac.
