Day One Highlight: Torey Pudwill Wins $10,000 Best Trick Contest and Spot in Sunday's Final 12
The first-ever Maloof Money Cup New York presented by Vans kicked off Saturday with the qualifier for the Volcom Street Pro. The world's greatest pro skaters broke in the brand new MMC skatepark in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, Queens, under a blazing sun and packed house of more than 10,000 NYC skateboarding fans.
Chris Cole, Greg Lutzka and Ryan Decenzo all destroyed the course with tricks like switch front-boards and switch bluntslides. Number one qualifier Paul Rodriguez, winner of the 2008 Maloof Money Cup Orange County, set the standard for the day with smooth and effortless shredding on every obstacle in every section. Frenchman Bastien Salabanzi worked his magic with backside flips over the big rail, a cab flip down the 9-stair, and half-cab noseslides to 270 out on the grate ledge.
Sunday's finals promise even more action, with Torey Pudwill, winner of the $10,000 Tech Deck Best Trick award in the second qualifying spot and quiet annihilator Peter Ramondetta rounding out the top five. Vans rider Keegan Sauder killed the course to earn his spot in the finals.
