SAUSALITO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 09/16/10 -- Zonability has been named one of five winners in the statewide "Apps for Californians" contest sponsored by The Center for Digital Government, in collaboration with the State of California, City of Los Angeles, the County of Los Angeles, the City and County of San Francisco, Google, Microsoft and ProgrammableWeb.
Contestants were required to combine open government data sets and APIs (Application Programming Interface) to create innovative mash-ups. Judging criteria included: usefulness, innovation, government efficiency and accessibility. Open Data is making it possible for regular citizens to create useful apps for smart phones and websites, combining government data and available APIs.
Zonability's submittal, an iPhone web app designed for San Francisco, is intended to help the person get zoning information and communicate with a City planner. The app has an interactive zoning map, a geo-location and a pre-formatted message to allow for quick confirmation of basic zoning information. The interactive map combines the Google API with San Francisco's zoning GIS layer and its zoning ordinance. Property details information came from Zillow's API.
The mobile platform gives the meaning of the zoning, including some uses (those which look to be "ok" as well as those "prohibited") and size related data (rules about building heights, lot size and floor area ratio or overall building size). The pre-formatted email asks for confirmation of important details such as historic districts, overlays and other restrictions. To download a free copy of the iphone app go to www.zonability.com/sf.
Zonability makes local real estate and community rules accessible and interactive through proprietary technology. Leigh Budlong, Founder, invented the concept of Zonability after working for years as a commercial real estate appraiser.
Other winners were: California Cage Fight, California Environment Report: Cleanup Sites and Permitted Facilities, California View and DataCalifornia. ZonabilitySF congratulates all of its fellow participants.
