Austin running race provides unique, fun format for runners and funds for teaching Central Texas children about financial literacy
Today, Silicon Labs (NASDAQ:SLAB) and Junior Achievement announced another successful Austin Marathon Relay, Junior Achievement's largest annual fundraiser and one of the country's top Relay events. The proceeds from the event support Junior Achievement's efforts to help children in central Texas develop financial literacy. This year's race raised over $130,000 for Junior Achievement, supporting financial education programs for at least 3,000 Central Texas students.
Junior Achievement of Central Texas, a non- profit organization, coordinates the Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay each year to raise awareness of its financial literacy program. The Relay combines running, one of Austinite's favorite activities, in a unique team-oriented format with proceeds supporting a good cause. The end result was another wildly successful family event.
The winning team of Jack and Adam's Bicycles finished the marathon distance in 2:13:35. The team was made up of Keith Pierce, David Fuentes, Scott Kimball, Derick Williamson and Derek Yorek. This is the fifth year in a row the Jack and Adam's team has won the race.
Austin's only five-person marathon relay, the race started from Auditorium Shores and wound in various routes downtown and the Capital, covering 26.2 miles. The central location, onsite local food vendors and activities for kids provided a great place for family and friends to hang out while team members ran their leg of the course.
"We're thrilled to be part of the Relay , a terrific event in a really special city, supporting a great cause," said Shannon Pleasant, Director of Corporate Communications at Silicon Laboratories and race participant. "Financial literacy is a very real problem that has become even more contemporary through the economic crisis. The Relay raises the profile of Junior Achievement, an organization uniquely positioned to change the course of many children's lives and help them end the cycle of debt and poverty that are often the catalysts for so many other devastating community issues."
All proceeds from the 2010 Silicon Labs Austin Marathon Relay benefit Junior Achievement of Central Texas, providing educational resources to teach financial literacy by local business and community volunteers that meet with over 16,000 area students each year.
"This year's relay was the best yet and we are fortunate to have such a supportive community here in Austin," said Dave Swincher, president of Junior Achievement of Central Texas. "It was great to have so many runners, spectators, volunteers and sponsors come out and support our cause and what we believe in. This relay is making a big impact on the lives of students in Austin and it is important that we continue our efforts every year."
If you're interested in giving back to Junior Achievement, you can participate in the "Give 10" program and sign up to donate $10 to the non-profit each month.
