National Wireless Provider Presents Awards for First Annual "Grandparent of the Year" Contest at AARP's National Event & Expo
Consumer Cellular (www.consumercellular.com), the exclusive wireless provider for AARP members, announced the winners of its 2010 "Grandparent of the Year" contest at the AARP Orlando@50+ expo. The grand prize, a six night Caribbean cruise for four on a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, was awarded to Pam Payne of Ironton, Ohio.
Consumer Cellular designed its first-ever "Grandparent of the Year" contest to raise awareness of Grandparents Day, which was first established in 1978 to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children and to help kids become aware of the strength, information, and guidance older people can offer. Entrants of Consumer Cellular's "Grandparent of the Year" contest were asked to submit nominations in the form of an essay or video that showcased grandparents who do extraordinary things for their family and their community.
"We are excited to announce and honor the three winners in our first annual Grandparent of the Year contest," said Consumer Cellular CEO John Marick. "Consumer Cellular designed this contest to raise awareness of Grandparents Day and celebrate the people who make it possible, extraordinary Grandparents. We were so pleased with the responses received and the heartwarming stories submitted of Grandparents who do amazing things for their families and their communities."
The Grandparents Day second place prize, four roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere Delta or United Airlines flies in the continental United States, was awarded to Tricia Petway of Apex, N.C. Third place, a two-night stay for four at any Marriott hotel property in the continental United States, was awarded to Paula Young of Londonderry, N.H.
Contest entries were accepted through Friday, September 3. All entries were posted online and the general public was invited to vote for their favorite submission until September 7. The top five finalists, as voted on by the public, were announced on Friday, September 10, right before the Grandparents Day weekend. Grand, second and third prize winners were announced by Consumer Cellular today during the annual AARP Orlando@50+ expo in Orlando, Fla. Winners are also posted at www.consumercellular.com/grandparents.
