More than 12,000 attendees(i) (8,000 registered participants(i)) joined together today in a sea of pink at Southcentre Mall for the 19th annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure (the Run). Families and friends showed their support by walking or running the 1k or 5k routes.
"Each year we see an overwhelming amount of support from Calgarians," says Suzanne Fallowfield, Volunteer Co-Run Director for the 2010 Calgary Run. "From corporate teams to schools, clubs, families and friends, we continue to be thrilled with the level of participation. We have made tremendous advancements in breast cancer research over the last decade, but we still haven't reached our goal of creating a future without breast cancer. Each Run event brings us a little closer to achieving our goal, and I am excited to announce that Calgarians raised approximately $1.43 million dollars today to support breast cancer research and education programs."
Catriona Le May Doan, two-time Olympic Gold Medallist, attended the Run for the seventh year as the Honorary Chairperson, speaking in both the opening and closing ceremonies. "To be back for a seventh year is an honour," said Le May Doan. "This event is such an inspiration to all of those affected with breast cancer and sends a strong message of hope and survivorship. The amount of volunteer hours that goes into making the Run a success is phenomenal, and to see people coming out of their homes along the routes to show support and cheer on the participants is so motivating."
Lively entertainment was provided by the ever-popular Ad Hoc Band and the Heebee Jeebees. Pinked-up participants enjoyed socializing, reading and posting their own messages of support at the Wall of Hope, and cheering on those who were presented top awards for funds raised by October 1. Congratulations to our top fundraiser Daryl Ferko, who raised more than $18,400. New this year was Calgary's Run mascot, "HOPE" - a pinked-up gorilla that led the way on the route in the pace car in addition to a pinked zone "Survivors Tent" for all survivors to partake in complementary foot massages and other great treats!
