What
A 5K run/walk is being held October 9th in Martinez to commemorate the tragic death of a local high school athlete, Pittsburg resident Darius Jones, who suffered sudden cardiac arrest and died while playing in a youth basketball game Oct. 11, 2009. He was 15 years old. This event will raise awareness and funds for the Darius Jones Foundation.
Who
The event is sponsored by the Darius Jones Foundation, a non-profit organization that exists to create awareness and education among players, coaches, referees, youth leaders and parents in all athletic leagues; on the importance of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation education and the availability of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at all sites where athletic practices or game events are planned, organized or held.
When
The walk will take place Saturday, October 9th. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. with opening ceremonies at the John Muir Amphitheater (115 Tarantino Drive, Martinez) and the run/walk will be through the Martinez Regional Shoreline Park (1 Ferry St, Martinez). The walk will end with a celebration at the Amphitheater.
How
The run/walk is non-competitive and open to people of all ages. Pre-registration fundraising fee is $25 for adults, $15 for children 18 and under, and children under 10 are free. Fee includes a t-shirt and morning snack. Register in advance online at www.dariusjonesfoundation.org or by calling (925) 473-1283.
Why
This fundraising event is taking place to help educate and drive awareness of the need for CPR training, medical pre-screening and on-site AED accessibility with a special emphasis on youth and high school athletic programs. As stated by Darius' mother Beverly Monique Bradley, "I want to make sure that a parent never feels as helpless as I did that day."
