Missouri American Water's environmental management program has reached a 10,000-ton milestone, just in time for America Recycles Day – a national day dedicated to the promotion of consumer recycling programs in the United States. The company's five-year program has successfully eliminated 10,000 tons of water treatment residuals, paper, cardboard, metal, batteries and other materials from local landfills.
Missouri American Water is a partner in the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) WasteWise Program, a voluntary EPA program through which organizations work to eliminate wastes --benefiting the environment and their bottom lines. As a WasteWise partner, the company has worked to continually improve its environmental performance by engaging employees in identifying new recycling and waste reduction opportunities.
"Recycling is an important part of good environmental stewardship," said Cindy Hebenstreit, Director, Water Quality & Environmental Management for Missouri American Water. "However, it is just one component of our environmental management program, which includes enhancing biodiversity on our properties, reducing energy consumption and eliminating waste at its source."
Missouri American Water's environmental management program was honored with EPA's Region 7 Pollution Prevention Award in 2007 for its environmental performance.
