Health Hazard Alert: Various Sandwich Products Made With Recalled Saputo Processed Cheese Slices May Contain Listeria monocytogenes

OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/05/10 -- Audio clips available at www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/relations/indexaude.shtml.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public not to consume the foods described below because these products may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

This is an ongoing food safety investigation. The CFIA is working with various manufacturers and retailers to identify and remove all affected sandwich products that were made with processed cheese slices recalled by Saputo Inc., Montreal, Quebec on December 02, 2010 (www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2010/20101202ce.shtml).

Affected products are identified in the following table. As more products are identified the CFIA will continue to update its list of recalled products. For a complete list of all affected products, please visit: http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/corpaffr/recarapp/2010/2010liste.shtml

(i) Check with your place of purchase to determine if you have the affected product.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products.

Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria may cause listeriosis, a foodborne illness. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness, however, infections during pregnancy can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.

The manufacturers and retailers are voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace. The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recalls.

For more information consumers and industry can call the CFIA at 1-800-442-2342 / TTY 1-800-465-7735 (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time, Monday to Friday).
