Jasen W. Gundersen, MD, Appointed Chief Medical Officer of TeamHealth Hospital Medicine

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Jan. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- TeamHealth announced today the appointment of Jasen W. Gundersen, MD, MBA, CPE, SFHM, as Chief Medical Officer for TeamHealth Hospital Medicine.

"With diverse experience in healthcare, Dr. Gundersen brings a fresh perspective on the issues and challenges facing our industry and the specialty of Hospital Medicine," said Greg Roth, President and Chief Executive Officer, TeamHealth. "His clinical and non-clinical skills, as well as his extensive involvement with the Society of Hospital Medicine, make him well-suited to be Chief Medical Officer for our Hospital Medicine division."

Dr. Gundersen comes to TeamHealth from UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Mass., where he most recently served as Chief, Hospital Medicine. Dr. Gundersen earned his medical degree at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine; conducted his Family Medicine residency at UMass Memorial Medical Center - UMass Graduate Medical Education; and completed the Physician MBA program offered by the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His professional background includes senior management roles within hospitals and healthcare systems, including extensive experience in cross-departmental development and system-level experience coordinating and growing programs at multiple hospitals throughout New England.

Dr. Gundersen was the Inpatient Clinical Services Chief and Division Chief of Hospital Medicine at UMass Memorial Medical Center. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Family Medicine & Community Health. Other roles he has held include positions on the Board of Trustees for UMass - Clinton Hospital and as Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer for Marlborough Hospital. He has been a key member of strategic planning teams on a national level, such as Chair of the National Task Force on Family Medicine Hospitalists on behalf of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM), where he served as a national resource for Family Medicine physicians interested in working as hospitalists and as a facilitator for special interest forums at national meetings. As one of the SHM's Senior Fellows in Hospital Medicine (SFHM), he has distinguished himself as a leader in the field of hospital medicine. Furthermore, Dr. Gundersen has received the certified physician executive (CPE) distinction from the American College of Physician Executives. Dr. Gundersen was a leader of clinical quality improvement in the state of Massachusetts, where he served as an appointed member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine's Quality & Patient Safety Division.
