Carrier's mobile data traffic in Guam has quadrupled over the past year
The rapid growth of smartphones on Guam is prompting GTA TeleGuam to expand its 3G wireless network capacity for handling the skyrocketing data and voice communications traffic.
GTA TeleGuam Monday announced that it has activated three additional 3G cellsites in downtown Hagatna, Tumon and Tamuning, bringing to seven the total number of cellsites the carrier has added in the past two months. Work is continuing on three more cellsites that the company expects to be operational by the end of March.
"Today's ability to do more things on the go – such as checking email, sharing videos, or checking social networking sites – is driving exponential growth of mobile data traffic," said Andrew Gayle, executive vice president of product management and development for GTA TeleGuam. "In the past year, GTA TeleGuam's mobile data and voice traffic has more than quadrupled, due largely to the proliferation of smartphones on our 3G network."
Additional capacity through the three new cellsites will ensure faster data connections for sending and receiving messages and downloading information from the Internet.
Last month, GTA TeleGuam activated four 3G cellsites in Tumon, Dededo, Tiyan, and Micronesia Mall to boost capacity and keep up with insatiable wireless data demand.
"GTA TeleGuam continues making heavy investments in anticipation of continued growth," Gayle said. "GTA TeleGuam is committed to providing customers an outstanding wireless experience now and in the future, consistent with its 'Always There For You' promise."
According to industry researchers, mobile data traffic is forecast to double worldwide each year through 2014.
Smartphones allow users to access the Internet, send email, browse the Web, stream music, download videos, send photos, text, talk and more. Smartphone customers use, on average, about 10 times more data than users of basic cellular phones. This is because they have access to more applications, data capabilities and other functionality than traditional wireless phones.
The smartphone leader in Guam, GTA TeleGuam is the only authorized provider to offer customers the choice of iPhone, BlackBerry and Android.
Smartphone prices in Guam start at less than $100 with a two-year service agreement. Customers can get discounts when they bundle their smartphones with other GTA TeleGuam communication services, including local and long-distance phone service, high-speed Internet access and GUdTV, short for Guam Digital Television.
GTA TeleGuam offers a wide range of smartphones from top manufacturers to best match consumer needs, preferences and budgets. These include Nokia, Research in Motion (BlackBerry), Apple (iPhone), HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Palm, Sony Ericsson, and Pantech.
