Multistate Bar Examination Expert Addresses Graduates
Concord Law School of Kaplan University, the nation's leading fully-online law school, celebrated the graduation of 117 students on Saturday, February 26, at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The graduating class of doctors, business people, professors and other professionals included 78 graduates of the Juris Doctor program and 39 who earned an Executive Juris Doctor degree.
Rafael Guzman, a nationally known lecturer and one of Concord's founding academicians, delivered the keynote speech. Guzman exhorted the graduates to be certain that they remember that all rules and laws need to be tempered with compassion and understanding: "The rule of law is a wonderful idea, but one should not follow a rule when common sense and justice say otherwise."
Guzman was an early supporter of—and contributor to—Concord Law School's robust online curriculum. He taught at the University of Arkansas from 1967 through 2008 and has served on numerous state and national commissions and committees in the areas of criminal law and evidence. Guzman is an expert on the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) and lectures to recent law school graduates across the country as they prepare for the exam. He received his B.A. from Dayton University and his LL.B. at George Washington University. A member of The Order of the Coif, Guzman was admitted to practice in the District of Columbia in 1964.
Award winners at today's graduation included Adnan Fakih for the Kaplan Legal Services Award, Thomas Peter Feledy for the Distance and Education and Training Council's Outstanding Graduate Award, and James R. Field for the Jack R. Goetz Award. The Sue Lane Award was shared by two students who overcame the death of a spouse while attending law school: Zigmund Sepanski and Wanda Teresa Ziemba.
