Vernier Creates Engineering Challenges for Use with National Instruments LabVIEW

"Engineering Projects with NI LabVIEW(TM) and Vernier" is the latest lab book for Vernier's engineering offerings

BEAVERTON, Ore., March 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As part of its mission to build STEM education, Vernier Software & Technology has expanded its repertoire of engineering products for the classroom with the release of its new lab book - Engineering Projects with NI LabVIEW(TM) and Vernier. The new lab book contains engaging hands-on projects and challenges utilizing NI LabVIEW development software. Students will be introduced to engineering concepts such as sensor construction, analog and digital input, control systems, and voltage dividers. Most importantly, students will learn about solving problems and designing solutions.

The lab book can be used with SensorDAQ, LabQuest, or LabQuest Mini. It contains essential teacher information, 12 projects with challenge exercises, editable Microsoft Word files, NI LabVIEW sample programming for each project and challenge, and a generous site license that allows teachers to buy one lab book and duplicate material for the entire class. In addition, the lab book includes the new Vernier Toolkit for LabVIEW which makes creating LabVIEW programs with Vernier analog and digital sensors easy and straight forward.

"Working through design requirements, developing a solution, and solving a problem empowers students. This hands-on approach is the strongest way to introduce engineering to students. We want engineering students to be engaged and we want them to see engineering as a profession worth pursuing," said David Vernier, co-founder of Vernier and a former physics teacher.

Using the NI LabVIEW Education Edition software with Vernier's lab book gives high school and college students experience using the same professional grade software they will use when they go out into the workforce. It includes modules for use with educational hardware, including Vernier's LabQuest, LabQuest Mini, SensorDAQ, and LEGO NXT Sensor Adapter. Once connected to the appropriate interface, the software allows students to log and analyze data, build sensor-controlled NXT robots, or perform feedback and control functions while introducing engineering measurement, automation, and biomedical concepts.

In addition to the Engineering Projects with NI LabVIEW and Vernier lab book, Vernier also offers a book to teach LabVIEW: Hands-On Introduction to NI LabVIEW with Vernier. In addition, Vernier offers two books for middle school students to try to get them excited about science and engineering: STEM with Vernier and LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT, and STEM 2 with Vernier and LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT. All of these books contain labs specifically designed to help students learn more about engineering concepts through a series of hands-on exercises.

Pricing and Availability

The Engineering Projects with NI LabVIEW and Vernier lab book sells for $48. For additional information about this lab book and Vernier's complete engineering offerings, visit www.vernier.com/engineering.
