Profile America -- Saturday, March 5th. Today marks the birthday of Emmett Culligan, who turned a household problem into a major corporation. Concerned about the minerals in the water used to wash his baby's diapers, he experimented in the 1920s with a device to soften water. By 1936, he had perfected the system to the point that he started his own company, which went on to become the world's largest water treatment organization. Today, America uses an average of nearly 1,400 gallons of water a day for each resident, including irrigation, power generation and industrial purposes.
