SALT LAKE CITY, March 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Boart Longyear , the world's leading integrated drilling products and services provider, has expanded its line of underground rock drill and blast rods and bits with the new Robust Standard Thread (RST(TM)) Series, designed for improved impact efficiency, potentially faster penetration rates, increased resistance to rod tip-off events, and less hole deviation.

During a field comparison, the RST(TM) series drill string was over 20 percent faster than the competing standard string, and averaged around 30 percent more meters drilled than the standard bit and rod designs.
The rods incorporate a larger cross-sectional transition area for a nearly 45 percent increase in bending strength, and the bit skirt is extended for improved interface, reducing the likelihood of rod tip-off events and reducing cost and downtime. The design of the RST(TM) series results in straighter and truer holes with a potential for increased penetration rates and higher productivity.
Interchangeability is an additional benefit of the RST(TM) series. Unlike competitive offerings that utilize unique thread designs, the RST(TM) series allows for interchangeability with standard threaded rods and bits for improved flexibility in the field.
The RST(TM) series also offers an optional retract or straight track bit design that provides a cleaner and straighter hole as well as easier bit removal in varied ground conditions.
