Bunker Hill Community College to Host Talk by Artist Ekua Holmes on March 10

BOSTON, March 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Renowned painter and collage artist Ekua Holmes will give a gallery talk at Bunker Hill Community College on Thursday, March 10, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the College's Art Gallery. Holmes is currently the subject of a solo retrospective exhibit at the College, titled "Pieces of a Dream," which spans more than 20 years of her work. The exhibit runs through March 25, 2011.

Holmes, a native of Boston and a graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art, has worked as both an art director and independent curator. She is curator for "Epiphany: Excerpts from the Lives of Black Women Artists," an annual group exhibit she founded in 2000.

Her first exhibit, "Renewal and Regeneration," with graphite drawings and watercolor paintings, was held in 2000. Her body of work has since expanded to include mixed media collage, which is now her signature medium. Holmes was a featured Artscope Magazine cover artist in 2007, and currently serves as President of the Board for Discover Roxbury. She was recently asked by the Massachusetts College of Art's Center for Art and Community Partnerships to coordinate arts programming for neighboring Mission Hill and Lower Roxbury.

"Pieces of a Dream" includes portraits of ancestors, favorite "aunties," children at play, and sacred gardens. In her artist's statement for the exhibit Holmes writes that her goal is "that the exploration of the very personal vision enriches and completes a wide social context..."
