1 800 GET THINSM is proud to sponsor beach cleanup efforts organized by RenewTheBlue.org. By answering the simple question: "Where does this go when I pour it down the storm drain or toss it out the window?", RenewTheBlue.org's goal is to educate the public and ask everyone to make small adjustments in their daily habits which will greatly impact the health and cleanliness of our oceans. When it rains, storm drains flow directly to rivers which carry pollution and bacteria to beach waters. The rain also carries city garbage and debris to the ocean and washes up along the shoreline, polluting our beaches with hundreds of plastic bottles, cigarette butts, fast-food wrappers, used diapers, dead animals, shoes, tennis balls, plastic oil cans, wood and thousands of pieces of Styrofoam.
By taking some simple, direct actions to become a more active member of your community, you can help protect the ocean and beaches you love. RenewTheBlue.org highlights a very simple guideline that would make an enormous impact on our beaches:
"Side Pocket" It - Instead of throwing trash or cigarette butts out the window, put it in your car door's side pocket or ashtray until you can toss it out the next time you fill up your gas tank. Take it one step further and save your plastic/glass bottles and place them in the big blue recycler.
The next beach cleanup will happen at 9:00 am, Sunday, March 20th, in Huntington Beach on the corner of Golden West and PCH. To learn more about how you can get involved, visit: www.renewtheblue.org.
