Wind Crest Hosts Intergenerational Event for Teens, Residents / New Program Has Teens Helping Seniors with Their Computers, Cell Phones

LITTLETON, Colo., March 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Thanks to a unique, new intergenerational opportunity, residents at the Wind Crest full service retirement community in Littleton now have a place to turn when they struggle with their computers and cell phones, need someone to walk their dogs or are short a Scrabble partner.

Tara Collins, a high school junior who serves as a waitress and peer trainer in Wind Crest's dining room, has created the program. "I feel that the residents have given our generation so much," Collins said. "It's time for my generation to give back."

Because high school students need community service hours to graduate, this project is "a big win-win for everyone," Collins said.

Collins said she expects 100 elders to attend her program's kick-off event where they'll get a chance to ask volunteer teens for help. "We're bringing the wisdom and experience of both generations together," Collins said.

Beth Irtz, Associate Executive Director at Wind Crest, said the facility's leadership and its residents are excited about the intergenerational program. "The Tara's Day kickoff event Sunday has grown into something very special," said Irtz. "Intergenerational opportunities like this are a key part of the culture change movement, supporting resident-directed care, decision making and self determination. This movement is finding real traction now in retirement communities like the one here at Wind Crest."

On Sunday, March 20th at 5 pm, Wind Crest residents will learn about the Tara's Day program and play a few rounds of bingo while enjoying some refreshments. News media representatives are welcome to attend the event.
