Carson-Dellosa to Offer Teachers Highly Beneficial Singapore Math Products / New Workbooks to Utilize Effective Singapore Math Techniques

GREENSBORO, N.C., March 23, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Carson-Dellosa Publishing, LLC, a leading provider of premium quality standards-based learning resource solutions, has announced that it now offers an exciting new array of learning materials built around the highly acclaimed "Singapore Math" instructional method. The math curriculum in Singapore has been recognized worldwide for its excellence in producing students highly skilled in mathematics.

"Our resources will undoubtedly help U.S. students improve their math abilities," said Judy Harris, CEO of Carson-Dellosa Publishing. "We are thrilled to unveil this line of product to our customers and are energized by this new and innovative direction. This math curriculum has been recognized at both the U.S. federal level and on a global scale for its excellence and efficacy."

The Singapore teaching methods have been recognized by both President Obama and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan as techniques that have significantly boosted Singapore students' math scores over the past several years; both Obama and Duncan have been advocates of its use within American schools. These methods have been praised by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Mathematics Advisory Panel and are discussed in the proposed Common Core Standards. Other nations are successfully adopting various aspects of it.

"In 8th grade math...Singapore's middle-schoolers outperform ours three to one," remarked President Obama in a speech on March 10, 2009. Additionally, students in Singapore have ranked at the top in the world in mathematics on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) in 1993, 1995, 2003, and 2008. Students in Singapore are typically one grade level ahead of students in the United States. As a direct result of this, Singapore Math has gained in interest and popularity in the United States.

"The Singapore Math method is a shift from the traditional math memorization strategies," explained Lisa Fleming, Director of Carson-Dellosa Product Development. "This new pedagogy helps students think critically and visualize math through model drawing and problem solving. The curriculum progresses from concrete learning experiences to representational to abstract understanding, enabling students to formulate, apply and solve real-world problems."

Some examples of the various math problem types and skill sets included in the workbooks are: comparing, sequencing, visualization, guess and check, and the before-after concept, among various others.

The Singapore Math product line includes grade-level specific Singapore Mental Math, Singapore Math 70 Must-Know Word Problems, and Singapore Math Practice for grades 1-7. These resources are available now at www.carsondellosa.com as well as most teacher supply stores, and major booksellers.

Favoritenwechsel
